Description of Services

  • Developmental editing is the very beginning of the editorial process. You’ve completed a first (or second or third…) draft, and it’s time for a second set of eyes to work out any bigger picture kinks. In fiction, this can be matters such as plot, pacing, character development, and structure. In nonfiction, the organization, depth of content, and adherence to the book’s main purpose are at the forefront. If hired for developmental editing, I can offer a single developmental pass or multiple, depending on budget and the project’s needs.

  • Copyediting is appropriate for manuscripts that have already been developed and are more or less final content-wise. With this service, I’ll do a minimum of two very close, careful reads of a manuscript to address grammatical errors and readability. This service includes a style sheet clearly outlining the style choices within your manuscript to ensure consistency throughout the editing process.

  • This is the last stage of the editing process. At this point, you have a typeset or otherwise designed manuscript, and proofreading is the final pass to catch any lingering errors. Additionally, proofreading passes ensure that there are no typography errors (for example, headings in the wrong font, bad line breaks, widows and orphans, etc.) and that any images or graphics are in harmony with the text. This is not a stage in which matters of style or tone are addressed—my general approach is to focus solely on correcting errors to the reduce the possibility of new errors being unintentionally introduced.

  • This service is especially useful for fiction series and ongoing writing projects. Generally working with a first book or installment, I do a careful read while recording matters relating to character, plot, timeline, setting, and specific characteristics to ensure consistency across the project. A lore guide is the definitive resource for your project that you can reference to ensure that no character’s hair changes color and that there are no discrepancies in your story’s timeline.
